Explore the Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway traverses 469 total miles between Virginia and North Carolina.  The drive can be divided into 4 different sections: The Ridge, The Plateau, The Highlands, and The Pisgah. It's a pretty beautiful drive to take at any time of year, truly, but it's never more magical than under the gentle glow of autumn's fiery hues. 

Though part of the joy of traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway is just admiring the scenic beauty outside your window, there are so many wonderful things to do and see along this stretch of road as well. From hiking and biking to learning more about this region's history and culture, you won't run out of things to do along this scenic stretch of highway. 

There's no shortage of natural wonders to explore as you drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, including the highest mountain peak in the eastern United States, the highest waterfall east of the Rockies, and the deepest gorge east of the Grand Canyon. But that's certainly not all!  Below, we've highlighted 10 of the best things to do on this marvelous stretch of highway. 

1. Hike to one of the many beautiful waterfalls along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are many great ones, including Crabtree Falls, Hickory Nut Falls (from the movie Last of the Mohicans), Looking Glass Falls, and so many more. 
2. Speaking of waterfalls, don't miss Linville Falls, which flows into Linville Gorge - the deepest canyon east of the Grand Canyon.
3. Climb to the top of Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park. 
4. Go underground at one of the many caves along the Blue Ridge Parkway, including Grand Caverns, Shenandoah Caverns, and The Lost Sea, home to the largest underground lake.
5. Head to Humpback Gap Overlook, where you can access the Humpback Rocks Trail. The 7.8-mile roundtrip hike includes Humpback Rocks and Humpback Mountain, where you'll find spectacular views stretching out below you.
6. Visit the Peaks of Otter area, one of the most popular sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. The Peaks of Otter Lodge is worth visiting, but here you'll also find great trails in the area around Abbott Lake, which features a stunning view of Sharp Top Mountain.
7. Don't miss your chance to visit the Mabry Mill, considered by many to be one of the most iconic destinations on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
8. Visit the Blue Ridge Music Center, which is part of Crooked Road, Virginia's heritage music trail. If you can catch a live concert here, the outdoor music venue is unbeatable. 
9. Visit Mount Mitchell State Park, home to the tallest peaks in the eastern United States. Access to this park is only along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and you can drive pretty close to the summit - though to actually reach the top, you'll need to finish the final 0.3 miles on foot. The views from there will take your breath away. 
10. Mount Pisgah is one of the most beautiful parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway - and the setting is particularly magical when fall foliage starts to arrive.

More to do Near the Parkway

Of course, seeing the stunning natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of our favorite ways to enjoy this beautiful drive, but it's not the only way. This part of the country is also home to some truly wonderful towns worth visiting. 

Asheville, North Carolina, is perhaps one of the most well-known cities near the Blue Ridge Parkway, known for its thriving arts and music scene, as well as its delicious southern cuisine. In the area, enjoy top attractions like George Vanderbilt's onetime home, The Biltmore Estate. 

A little farther north, you'll find the town of Blowing Rock, a town filled with abundant mountain charm. It's a great place for hiking and chasing waterfalls, and come winter. It's a wonderful place for a ski vacation. 

Further north still in Virginia, you'll find the charming towns of Staunton and Lexington, both well-known for their food, arts, and a wide variety of things to do. These cities are great places to base your adventures on, not just the Blue Ridge Parkway but in Shenandoah National Park as well. You'll also find plenty of attractions worth visiting, like the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and the American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriar Playhouse.
