Explore The Savannah Historic District

Savannah is often considered one of the world's friendliest cities, thanks to the heavy dose of old-world southern charm you'll encounter everywhere you go. So far, we've talked about the best places to stay in Savannah, and we've listed some of our favorite things to do in Savannah, Georgia, too. Now, we'll turn our attention to the historic charm found in Savannah's historic district.

When you settle in at our Select Registry Bed and Breakfasts - rated as the best places to stay in Savannah - you'll be right in this historic heart of the city. Savannah's Historic District is the most extensive Historic Landmark District in the entire country. In it, you'll find 22 unique squares worth exploring, each filled with a range of museums, churches, mansions, monuments, and even forts dating back to the Revolutionary & Civil War eras.

The Savannah historic district was first established in 1966 to preserve the unique city plan and impressive historical buildings. The Savannah historic district extends from the Savannah River south to Gwinnett Street and East Broad Street westward to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

If you want to see some of the city's earliest examples of architecture, head to the Washington, Warren, and Greene Wards. For the popular Federal Brick-Style homes, turn to famous examples like the Owens-Thomas House and Scarbrough House.

Later, styles shifted towards the Greek Revival style, which you can see in the Christ Church (1838) and the United States Customs House (1848-1852). Finally, in the late 1850s, Savannah's style exploded with Italianate, Queen Anne, Gothic, and other exotic revival styles, many of which are seen in prominent residences from the era. This and more can be easily spotted in the Savannah historic district, which positively oozes with charm and architectural beauty.

Whether you simply want to stroll through these historic streets, admiring the sights as you go, or whether you want to fully immerse yourself with ghost tours through Savannah, there's no place quite like the Savannah historic district. Of course, all of this and more will be at your fingertips when you choose to Stay Select.
