Enjoy seeing the other side of the harbor and visit the Marblehead Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. With just under 1 mile of trails through the thicket, it’s a beautiful place to see migratory birds. On warm summer days, a visit to Devereux Beach is a must. Enjoy the pristine sand and gorgeous ocean views!
Ipswich
Just about 40 minutes north of Salem is Ipswich, Massachusetts. A coastal town, Ipswich has an adorable waterfront area filled with galleries, boutique shops, and cafes. It’s a fantastic place to spend an afternoon wandering through the waterfront area, checking out the boats and stores! Enjoy spending some time in the Ipswich Museum and see vintage vehicles from the 1800s as well as many other local historical items.
Longer Excursions from Salem, MA
Martha’s Vineyard
Possibly one of the most well-known places in Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard is about three hours away from Salem and is the perfect weekend trip. Drive south and then take the Woods Hole-Vineyard Haven Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. Lambert’s Cove Beach is a must-see, as well as the iconic East Chop Lighthouse. There’s nothing quite like ordering a delicious, fresh lobster roll to-go and enjoying it while taking in the incredible ocean views along the coastline.
Cape Cod
About 100 miles south, Cape Cod is one of our favorite weekend getaways from Salem. Wander through the quaint, coastal shops and appreciate the views of the lighthouses. It’s the best place in Massachusetts for some fresh seafood! The beaches are beautiful and especially enjoyable in the summer. President John F. Kennedy Museum is a must, and be sure to take time to sit and watch the sailboats moving along the coastline.
