Overall, our stay was fine, but for the price and a property affiliated with Select Registry, I expected more.
Positives: The location was excellent, with plenty of parking and the ability to leave the car and walk to just about anywhere in town. Access to Acadia was very convenient.
Negatives:
The rooms were extremely dated (think early 90s). While fairly clean, the overall condition left a lot to be desired. The free standing AC unit took up a large amount of space and the old radiator made considerable noise. The Sleep Number beds could have been a nice feature, except my partner’s side repeatedly deflated throughout the night. On top of that, the walls were incredibly thin, and we could hear our neighbors’ conversations as though we were sharing a room with them.
Breakfast was underwhelming, with a limited selection of average offerings. The servers also forgot to bring our juice which was our only request, as the meal was buffet-style. Additionally, we often headed out to hike around 6AM, but the coffee/tea/water had not been replenished.
If I had to sum up the experience in one word, it would be fine. Nothing was entirely disastrous, but very little stood out in a positive way beyond the location. The problem is that fine is not what I expect when paying a premium price for a hotel associated with Select Registry. All of these might seem like small issues individually, but collectively, they reflected a broader lack of care and attention to the guest experience.

Truly one of the worse run hotels we have ever stayed in. Our carriage house room was outdated, felt damp, room air conditioner dripping, towels thin. Missing any easy to reach plugs and no one thought to add even a lamp that could be used for plug in phone charging. The buffet breakfast was a joke--oatmeal was a cold lump sitting in an unheated casserole, cinnamon buns still cold from the freezer, cold pancakes sitting on a counter and when we asked for toast, we were told they do not offer any bread/toast! Cold maple syrup, missing butter, fruit bowls so small that only one or two people could take a serving then they sat empty! The second morning, no coffee available but with two different excuses from different people! And a sign that said "please don't ask for custom breakfast items."
We asked to have a manager contact us (again, to two different people because no one was in charge) and he/she was absent the entire weekend and never tried to contact us. Such a disappointing stay at what was probably a nice hotel at some point but they are now living off their reputation. Super expensive too! And one laughable thing we observed. While there are nice large frames on every wall, they were filled with prints of famous museum art! It was as if grandpa needed the money, sold the original art and realized if he took down the frames he'd have to spend money to cover up faded wallpaper!
Do not try to leave early-no refunds will be given.
We first stayed at the Balance Rock Inn 20 years ago. It was wonderful. The owners cared. We have stayed three times over the last decade. The Inn has become progressively dirtier, and the current management cares little. During our most recent stay, we treated ourselves to what was supposed to be an upgraded room. The first thing we noticed when we walked into the room was a horribly stained, dirty carpet. I suspect it was a carpet being tossed by a Motel 6.
The housekeeping staff barely cleaned the room. Vacuuming seemed to be one of the tasks no longer considered necessary. After our third night in the room, I asked the gentleman at the front desk if the housekeeping staff would mind vacuuming our room. He smiled, and the floors remained dirty.
After stepping on a crushed cigarette butt in our room - after it was supposedly cleaned, - my wife and I decided to check out a day early – recognizing we would still have to pay for the now empty room.
I would strongly urge you to look elsewhere. The current owners/management of this Inn are more concerned about offering the appearance of “elegance” than providing it.

Simply beautiful, no detail overlooked. There aren't many places I want to return to, but this is one of the few! It is so quiet here, and the view, spectacular! Abundant staff to meet your every need. The complimentary breakfast and also the prosecco upon arrival was unexpected but thoughtful/delightful. Family owned and it shows! Free parking onsite, just steps from the front door, was also very nice. This is an excellent value. There is something indescribable about the atmosphere here, it is beyond relaxing, hard to find today. If I could give this wonderful place and its workers 10 stars, I would!
