Best Wine Regions on the West Coast

Up and down the West Coast, from Washington to California, there are many wine regions to visit. It's hard to choose which of these represent the best wine regions in the US, as we think they all offer something different and distinctly delicious. To start, though, here are the four best wine regions in the US located on the West Coast. 

Washington Wineries

Eastern Washington, home to the Walla Walla Valley AVA, has recently been ranked as one of the best wine regions in the US.  The area is best known for its bold red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. 

The Walla Walla Valley is home to 120 Washington wineries. Though the red wines from the Walla Walla Valley are spectacular, Washington wineries in the area produce a broad range of wines, both red and white.

Oregon Wine Country

Oregon's Willamette Valley was named the 2016 wine-growing region of the year by Wine Enthusiast, which only worked to solidify this area as one of the best wine regions in the US. 

In total, there are nearly 650 Willamette Valley wineries calling the area home. Almost 70% of the wine grapes grown here are of the Pinot Noir variety, with Pinot Gris being the second most common.

Napa Valley Wineries

Napa Valley has long been hailed as one of the best wine regions in the US and worldwide.  Located just about an hour south of San Francisco, it's easy to get to, and the wine promises to be delicious.

There are 16 different appellations within the greater Napa Valley region, each representing a distinct microclimate and terrain that influences the characteristics of the wine grapes grown there. Within these 16 AVA's, there are more than 375 wineries and 90+ urban tasting rooms.

Paso Robles Wineries

The range of wineries in Paso Robles offers wine connoisseurs something unique. It's been said by many people and organizations that Paso Robles resembles what Napa or Sonoma was like in the '70s - in other words, a far less pretentious and more laid-back wine and food-loving destination that offers some of the best wine tasting experiences in the country right now. 

Paso Robles is the biggest AVA in California, but its characteristics are pretty distinct. More than 40 wine grape varieties are grown in the area, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne, and of course, Zinfandel, the area's heritage wine varietal.

The Finger Lakes Region, located in upstate New York, is one of the fastest-growing and best wine regions in the US. More than 100 Finger Lakes wineries are calling this area home.

The Finger Lakes Region is well-known for its aromatic white varietals like Riesling and Gewurztraminer. These wineries also produce a range of cool-climate reds like Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir.

Texas probably doesn't pop into your mind as one of the best wine regions in the US, but it's very worthy of mention. Texas Hill Country's wine-growing region is the 3rd largest in the country. The varietals produced by Texas Hill Country wineries are diverse but reflective of those you'd find in France, Spain, and Italy. 

With more than 1,000 acres of planted vineyards and 100+ wineries calling the area home, it should come as no surprise that Texas Hill Country wineries are considered one of the "must-visit" wine destinations in the country.

North Georgia Wineries

Just a couple of hours north of Atlanta, you'll find yourself immersed in Georgia's mountainous wine country, and one of the best wine regions in the US.  While Georgia might be more famous for craft beer and its historic moonshine, Georgia's wine industry is burgeoning.

North Georgia wineries are best known for their Muscadet and fruit wines, which makes sense given that Georgia is the Peach State.  However, plenty of other wine varietals is also produced here, which will round out your tasting adventure perfectly.
