Explore New River Gorge National Park

New River Gorge National Park is a very special place.  Not only is it the newest national park in the country, which makes it worth visiting in its own right, but it's sensationally beautiful. 

New River Gorge National Park is named after the New River, which is one of the oldest rivers in North America. The river is a scenic and rugged whitewater river that flows north through lushly forested, deep canyons. With more than 70,000 acres of land to explore, there's no shortage of great things to do in New River Gorge National Park.

New River Gorge National Park encompasses a vast array of the region's long history. From Natives and early pioneers to the railroad boom and coal mining and logging, this area has seen a lot. Beyond just being a beautiful park, it's a truly fascinating place to visit. 

After you've learned about the park's history, it's time to get out and explore.  Here are the most popular spots to visit in New River Gorge National Park: 

  1. The New River Gorge Bridge is beautiful, but it's also the longest steel span bridge in the western hemisphere and the third highest in the United States. Rightfully so, this bridge is one of the most photographed places in West Virginia. 
  2. You'll find the best view of the New River Gorge at the aptly named Grandview. Towering above the gorge at 1400 feet at Main Overlook, visitors are rewarded with one of the most outstanding enjoy one of the most breathtaking views in the park. There are also some great hiking trails that start here. 
  3. Sandstone Falls is the largest waterfall on the New River. The waterfall is 1500 feet wide, and drops between 10 - 25 feet, depending on water levels. 
  4. Visit the old towns in New River Gorge National Park, like Thurmond, Nuttalburg, and Prince
  5. There are a couple of farms in New River Gorge National Park worth visiting, too, both of which give visitors a glimpse into what life was once like in this area.
