In the wonderful wilds of West Virginia, there are many enchanting mountains and summits to explore.  One of the most notable is Spruce Mountain and its summit Spruce Knob.  You might ask, “Well, why is Spruce Knob famous in West Virginia?”  The answer lies in the size of the mountain and the elevation of the summit. There are also a number of things to do on the mountain including hiking, biking, wildlife observation, and more.  If you want to know more about the allures of Spruce Knob, one of the best things to do in West Virginia, read on!

Why Is Spruce Knob Famous In West Virginia?

So, out of all the mountains and summits in the state, why is Spruce Knob famous in West Virginia?  Well, Spruce Knob at the top of Spruce Mountain is the highest point in the state of West Virginia.  The summit has an elevation of 4,863 feet. Not only is it the highest point in West Virginia, but Spruce Mountain is also the highest peak in the Allegheny Mountain range.  The climate at Spruce Knob is cold continental or highland with cool summers and cold and snowy winters. Spruce Knob is also different from other summits in the area because of its distinctly alpine ambience.  As its name might suggest, top portion of the mountain is covered by a large population of spruce trees, creating a dense boreal forest.  This environment is often associated with the peaks of Canada and New England, but at Spruce Knobb you can experience it without having to travel that far north!

Activities At Spruce Knob

Opportunities for recreation at Spruce Mountain and Spruce Knobb. The summit is in the Spruce-Knob Rocks National Recreation Area (the first US Forest Service designated National Recreation Area), which itself is included in the Monoghela National Forest.  The mountain is home to a plethora of trails for hiking and biking, totaling more than 75 miles.  From these trails you might observe Black Bear, rabbits, porcupine, hawks, falcons, and eagles among other wildlife species.  Visitors to Spruce Knob also enjoy traveling to the Spruce Knob Tower, which gives you a birds eye view of the mountain.  There is also a trail that circles the summit that includes signage for interpretive use to identify plants and wildlife and explain the geology of the mountain.  If you’re an outdoor lover, you’ll feel right at home at Spruce Knob.
