Welcome
An historic 20-room former governor’s mansion, Swift House Inn is Middlebury’s premiere full-service inn. Large, comfortable, and well-appointed rooms can be found throughout three distinct buildings spread across four acres of extensive lawns and mature formal gardens. Many rooms and common areas have fireplaces and quintessential vintage New England decor.
There’s much to do around Middlebury, Vermont, including visiting Middlebury College, strolling by downtown boutiques, taking in world class performances at Town Hall Theater or at the College, or visiting the many area museums and historic sites. But first, start here—with an outstanding gourmet meal at our restaurant: Jessica’s at Swift House Inn, prepared by Executive Chef Rob Fenn. Located in the Main House, meals are served in any of the three historic dining rooms and the Blue Bar. Our authoritatively curated wine list was again honored in 2021 with a Best of Award of Excellence by Wine Spectator magazine, one of fewer than 1200 restaurants in the world and one of only three restaurants in Vermont with this accolade.
Swift House Inn is ideally located near numerous biking and hiking trails connecting the Champlain Valley. The entrance to the beautiful and challenging Trail Around Middlebury is only steps away from the inn’s entrance. This trail connects to the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail. Fly fish numerous rivers and streams throughout the Green Mountains. In the winter, guests can enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing at Rikert Nordic Center, a truly gorgeous and complex trail area. Middlebury Snow Bowl, Stowe, and Killington are all within an hour’s drive.

Food & Wine
Our restaurant, Jessica’s at Swift House Inn, is one of the finest restaurants in Vermont. Creative, locally-sourced food is served in a tastefully decorated, updated traditional setting.
Breakfast is complimentary with a night’s stay.. The menu revolves around perfect, tender buttermilk pancakes served with locally tapped maple syrup, egg dishes cooked to order and delicious baked goods. Fans rave about the meaty, smoky bacon and sausage and our house made granola.
Chef Rob’s dinner menu features elevated interpretations of traditional favorites: hearty soups, imaginatively composed salads and starters and main courses designed to showcase the best seasonal offerings of meats, seafood and vegetables. Rob’s long-standing connections with area farmers, local growers, and ranchers influence the ever-changing menu.
Be sure to grab a drink in our Blue Bar with in-house mixologist Laura and our sommelier David. The bar features a wide selection of local Vermont beers and artisanal spirits and our award-winning wine list. In addition, we have a full menu of creative and seasonal cocktails using local ingredients such as syrups made from lilac blossoms and lavender sourced from our own gardens.

Rooms & Suites
Built in 1814 in the Federal Style, the Main House is a nine-bedroom mansion which once housed the governor of Vermont and his family. Formerly the master bedroom, the Swift Room still has the old brass internal telephone that Jessica Swift once used. Just up the driveway from the Main House is the six-room Carriage House, with updated amenities including wood burning and gas fireplaces, jetted tubs, and king size beds. The Carriage House has a steam room, sauna, and conference room. The Mansfield room features a private patio, which leads to a walkway weaving through the four-acres of manicured lawns and gardens. Or you may prefer the more Victorian feel of the Gate House, a short half block walk from the Main House. It features a wraparound porch, turret room, ornate woodwork, and stained glass. The spacious well-appointed parlor is roomy enough for the whole family to play games and cozy enough for just you to curl up near the fire with a good book.
