Add These Wineries to Your Virginia Getaway

The variable weather experienced in Virginia can be dramatically different from year to year, which is in part what makes this such a fascinating wine region to explore. Winemakers and farmers at the top Virginia wineries work hard all year long, honing their craft and tending to their vines to ensure that something not just delicious but interesting winds up in your glass.

Like many other things in Virginia, the result of this dedication to artistry and craft is something truly exceptional. You can taste to unique qualities of Virginia's wine region in every bottle, as winemakers bring a true sense of place to everything they do. It's quickly becoming one of the top wine tasting destinations on the east coast, comparable with the Finger Lakes Wine Region in Upstate New York!

There are more than 4,000 acres of grapes in Virginia and more than 250 wineries. Those Virginia wineries are further divided into ten regions and eight distinct AVAs. Virginia wineries grow a vast number of grapes, but varietals like Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot shine here. Bordeaux-style red blends are some of the most highly acclaimed wines produced at Virginia wineries - each with their distinct bit of Virginia flair for a truly unique wine tasting experience.

Are you ready to get out and explore? Here's a list of 10 of the best Virginia wineries to try.

  1. Barboursville Vineyards is one of the more famous Virginia wineries to make our list and is located just outside Charlottesville. Their flagship wine is a well-rounded red Bordeaux blend. As you stroll the grounds, don't miss the ruins of a mansion built by Thomas Jefferson.
  2. Another largest and most popular Virginia wineries is Breaux Vineyards in Loudon County in northern Virginia. They offer a broad range of wines, including red, white, fruit, and sparkling varietals.
  3. Ankida Ridge Vineyards in Amherst is a remote mountaintop vineyard that offers sensational views, something that is outshined only by the unique pinot noir and chardonnay's you'll find here.
  4. Dave Matthews - yes, that Dave Matthews - owns Blenheim Vineyards. This one is also just outside Charlottesville, and though it's fun to visit something owned by a celebrity, you should be coming for the wine. It won't disappoint! They're known for their Painted Red Bordeaux-style blend and the Painted White Chardonnay/Viognier/Sauvignon Blanc blend.
  5. If you're visiting Virginia's horse country near Middleburg, don't miss Boxwood Estate Winery. Their red Bordeaux-style blends are great, but we love their dry rose on a hot summer's day.
  6. You'll find the beautiful Chateau Morrisette just off the stunning Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd. It's a great place to try some Viognier, along with some Virginia fruit wines, and they go perfectly with the sweeping mountain views!
  7. Don't miss the raspberry merlot at Fabbioli Cellars near Leesburg if you're looking for something unique. Their much-awarded Tannat is also sensational.
  8. Linden Vineyards is Virginia's top Chardonnay producer, and its peaceful surroundings in the Blue Ridge Mountains offer a great escape during vacation.
  9. Many of the top Virginia wineries are dedicated environmental stewards, including DuCard Vineyards near Shenandoah National Park. Their flagship wine is the Bordeaux-Esque 2017 Triskele, which won the Virginia Governor's Cup Gold Medal.
  10. If great views are what you are after, you can't go wrong with target="_blank"Stone Tower Winery near Leesburg. Their wines are also, of course, delicious. This is an excellent place for red wine drinkers to discover white wines, as their 2016 Voignier is well-regarded.

As wonderful as these 10 Virginia wineries are, they represent a small fraction of the depth of winemaking in the Commonwealth of Virginia. There's a delicious wine to be sipped and swirled wherever you end up in the state. Check out the extensive range of Virginia wineries here, and start planning your trip today!
