The entire New England region is revered for its spectacular show of fall colors every year. New Hampshire, and specifically the White Mountains, are no exception. One of our favorite places to take in sweeping, colorful fall views is on the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway.
The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is located inside Franconia Notch State Park, itself a renowned destination in the fall, popular for its Flume Gorge Trail, its ample hiking opportunities, and beautiful natural scenery. The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is also pretty near the famed Kancamagus Highway, one of the most spectacular fall foliage drives in the entire country.
You could easily spend several days exploring New Hampshire's stunning White Mountains this fall. From hiking and biking to scenic drives and trips to the top of the mountain aboard things like the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, there's no shortage of ways to enjoy New Hampshire fall foliage. The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is not only the only tramway of its kind in New Hampshire, but it was also the first one in the United States! You'll hop on board the cable car at the bottom of the mountain in Franconia Notch State Park, and in less than 10 minutes you'll reach the top of the 4,080-foot summit! It's the tallest lift-accessed point in the state, and worth every minute.
From the top of the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, you'll enjoy a truly breathtaking view of the White Mountains and the valleys below. In fact, on clear days, you can see the mountain ranges of 4 states (New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, & Maine) as well as Canada in the distance! While the view is beautiful any time of year, there's nothing that compares to seeing it alight with the colorful hues of fall.
Once you've reached the summit and unloaded from the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, you'll have access to a variety of walking/hiking trails, a 360-degree observation deck from which to enjoy the views, a cafe, restrooms, and more.
The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is open from May - October 17, with peak fall foliage generally occurring between mid-September through early October. Advanced reservations for the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway are highly recommended, as walk-ins are only accepted when space is available, and this ride is very popular during the fall, especially on the weekends.
While we would certainly put the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway on our lists of "must-do" activities in the White Mountains, especially in the fall, there really are so many other incredible ways to enjoy this colorful season.
