5 Places for Great Skiing in Vermont

Depending on what you like, there are plenty of great places for skiing in Vermont. Whether you're looking for big ski runs, powdery backcountry, state-of-the-art resorts, or smaller, budget, and family-friendly ski areas, you'll find it in Vermont.

Winters in Vermont frequently see up to 25 feet of snow, and it starts early - generally by November -  and typically lasts until mid-April.  What that boils down to is that skiing in Vermont is relatively dependable! What's more, these Vermont ski resorts are also great places to get out for some hiking, mountain biking, and other adventure in the off-season. They aren't just open for winter!

If you're interested in skiing in Vermont this winter, it's best to plan.  Tickets are generally available online and should be purchased in advance. Some of the mandates put in place by the state of Vermont last year to ensure smaller crowds and a safer ski experience will be in place again this season.

The practices this year will vary from mountain to mountain, but in general, you can expect masks to be worn inside lodges, on lifts, and in lines, but not while you're skiing on the slopes. Policies may change throughout the year, though, so check the website of where you're going before you go. Here are some of the best places to go skiing in Vermont this winter:

  1. Sugarbush Resort in Warren, VT, is one of the best places for skiing in Vermont. It's located in the stunning Mad River Valley and is one of the largest ski areas in the state. There is a total of 16 ski lifts here, resulting in 53 miles of skiable trails.

It's famous for its beautiful and varied terrain, and it's the home of the nation's last surviving single chairlift. It's also entirely cooperatively owned and is one of the few places in the country that doesn't allow snowboarding.
  3. Killington Ski Resort is located near Woodstock, VIt'st's the largest ski resort in the eastern US, and it also has the longest vertical drop at 3,050 feet.
  4. With 99 trails, a variety of glades to ski, and several fast lifts to get you skiing in Vermont faster, Stratton Mountain Resort, near the town of Manchester, is a great place to spend some time this winter.
  5. Mount Snow, near the town of West Dover, is one of the closest places for skiing in Vermont for those living in major metropolitan areas on the East Coast. Skiers that have an Epic Pass can enjoy skiing at this partner resort, too!
